Has a pet changed your life? I often think of the Has a pet changed your life?

I often think of the quote, “Saving one dog will not change the world, but surely for that one dog, the world will change forever.”

Today, January 24th, we celebrate Change a Pet’s Life Day. If your New Year's Resolutions included helping animals in need this year, today is the day to get started!

Our shelter and rescue system is still trying to recalibrate in the wake of pandemic changes.

So many incredible dogs and cats (and rabbits and GUINEA PIGS - so many guinea pigs) are waiting in kennels for a home of their own. To celebrate Change a Pet’s Life Day, many shelters are having adoption events where fees may be lowered or waived entirely.

But if you’re reading from a full house, looking around at your spoiled critters feeling guilty about those you can’t take in - stop right there!

You can DEFINITELY still help change an animal’s life for the better.

Even if you can’t adopt a new pet, you can volunteer to walk one.

Can’t or don’t want to walk dogs? Here’s a SUPER EASY way you can help an animal RIGHT NOW:

Find your local animal shelter, rescue, or humane society. Most have a page on their website or social media listing all the animals they have available for adoption or foster.

Scroll through the pictures and find one who looks like your beloved pet, or choose one at random. Then become that animal’s champion!

Post their pictures and public information on your social media accounts. For adoptable animals, exposure is EXCELLENT.

You never know who you might connect, but you can rest assured that you’ll be changing that animal’s life forever.
Meet Pearl: Her tale told by her human mom! This Meet Pearl: Her tale told by her human mom!

This was 2018. We were living in the Catskills, running an inn, in the middle of a paradise of wild remoteness.

We were in bed one night, and my husband was searching dog adoption sites , when he showed me a picture of Pearl. Honestly, she was the most beautiful dog I’d ever seen—a 100 percent blue merle border collie with magical eyes. I said, “That’s my dog.”

I fell asleep. My husband stayed up all night and applied for Pearl. In the morning, he said, “I want to show you something.” It was the application for the dog who has completely stolen my heart.

I appreciated that my new baby’s name was Pearl, a moniker of Janis Joplin—and we lived near Woodstock New York at the time—and how can Janis Joplin not be moving? My Pearl has a condition called sectoral heterochromia iridum, which means that her eyes are two colors—a blend of border collie brown and sea blue. According to Native American lore, dogs with eyes of two colors have the capacity to see heaven and earth.

We got a call the day after my husband submitted our applications. We were told that Pearl was ours. Not sure either of us believed it. Turns out our beautiful Pearl—a border collie who needs exercise and stimulation and affection—had been raised in a hotel room. Was left alone a lot. Chewed through baseboards. and barked incessantly.

The people from the adoption agency also told us Pearl was so anxious they thought she was a flight risk. Get a harness!

I’ve never needed to leash Pearl from the moment I met her. She will not leave my side. Except for a frisbee. Which she returns to me.

Pearl is the light of our life. Everyday with her is an adventure and a joy.
“I want to work like a dog, doing what I was bor “I want to work like a dog, doing what I was born to do with joy and purpose. I want to play like a dog, with total, jolly abandon." -Oprah Winfrey-
